Yeah, an interesting one, eh?
1) 9 days on the playa... tent...
2) Coleman propane oven & single burner propane stove...
3) no refrigeration, just one cooler for champagne, beer, sodas & a tiny amount of food...
So, what delicious dishes can be baked with non refrigerated foods?
"But, why bake?" you may ask... the answer = no cleanup, just wad up some aluminum foil (and that's recycled at home) and get back to some serious par-ta-yang! (or is it par-ta-ying?)
sum ideas so far:
>>> stuffed peppers & corn = peppers, can roast beef hash, can tomato sauce, corn-on-the-cob in aluminum foil & (margarine in cooler)
>>> can chili over pouched precooked rice, breadsticks
>>> can chicken & gravy over pouched precooked rice, can peas
>>> small canned ham, can potatoes (mashed), can gravy
>>> soups or Dinty Moore stew & crackers
>>> Chung King chop suey over pouched precooked rice
>>> can ravioli or spaghetti & meatballs, breadsticks
>>> Boboli pizzas = Boboli's, sauce, onions, peppers & (cheese, pepperoni & pre-cooked bacon in cooler)
>>> nachos = chips, salsa, can refried beans, can jalepenos & (cheese & plastic tub pre-made taco beef in cooler)
>>> (hot dogs in cooler) on baked beans casserole, can brown bread
>>> baked potatoes with can chili & (cheese in cooler)
>>> sliced potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions in aluminum foil & (margarine in cooler)
extras >>> can veggies, can cranberry sauce, hot water things, cup-o-noodles, mac & cheese, hot & sour soup mix
BTW, how does store bread with preservatives hold up... how many days will it last with no refrigeration on the playa?
with bread, that opens up:
>>> peanut butter & (jam in cooler) sandwiches
>>> pouch tunafish & (mayo & cheese in cooler) sandwiches
>>> toasted (cheese & pre-cooked bacon & margarine in cooler) sandwiches
then sweet & snack things:
>>> can fruits
>>> cookies, individual pies
>>> dried fruits, raisins
>>> nuts
>>> plastic portioned pudding
>>> jerky
>>> ready to bake (cookies & cinnibuns in cooler)
OK, ok... yeah, yeah.... some of these are tasty, some are kinda so, so...
but... this is a BRAINSTORMING session....
Any ideas on simple to make, no clean up meals?
thanks...
BTW, have I told you lately how great you are?

Re: BAKED ideas for non refrigerated foods
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 11:48 AMyou shouldn't eat margarines. Butter is actually quite a healthy food and is great energy for the playa. -

Re: BAKED ideas for non refrigerated foods
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 6:00 PMThere's also the plus side that it doesn't actually need to stay refridgerated, you just need to keep it out of the sun and keep it cool.
Butter is better! -

Re: BAKED ideas for non refrigerated foods
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 8:18 PMI'm planning on making baked apples in an solar oven. All you need are apples, and stuff for filling such as nuts, raisins, cinnamon, cloves. None of these need refrigerating. :) -

Re: BAKED ideas for non refrigerated foods
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 2:28 AMlol Aliz... you dug this thread up from like forever ago! lol!!!
Sooo, I did take that Coleman propane oven to quite a few events (since broken, though)... it allowed me to make things not normally possible... the best received a few times were fresh, warm chocolate chip cookies late at night... I'd bring the premade dough, keep it in the cooler, then make them when it was cold at night... EVERYBODY loved them...
The Boboli pizza's worked out amazingly great!
For this year's burn, I am only bringing a one-burner stove, as now, there are SOOO many more options available for shelf-stable foods... seasoned tunafish in a can, pre-cooked rice, pre-cooked noodles, cooked chicken in a foil pouch, meals in plastic that you can boil to heat... but I still plan on making Boboli's, but in a covered frying pan to melt the cheese... he he... -

Re: BAKED ideas for non refrigerated foods
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 9:06 PMHaha yeah. I wasn't looking at the posting dates. :D
Mmmm yumm. :) I would LOVE to bake cookies (that was my original idea for the solar oven, actually), but my camp is going to be cooler-free. I wonder if there's anything similar that won't spoil, like cookie dough in a can or something. Or brownie mix that doesn't require eggs... omg..... that would be so good. (I'm a sweet-tooth, as you can see.) :) -

Re: BAKED ideas for non refrigerated foods
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 10:08 PMcooler free? ok... whatever... there ARE mixes in the baking aisle of your local grocery store that only require water... look around... Bisquick... or even buy those pre-made graham cracker crusts, and fill them with something from a can... instant pies! you CAN bake some sweets without refrigeration...
