how do you organize your communal kitchens?
do you let people pick a night of the week and say they'll cook something for everybody?
or do you declare a 'theme' nite and let people chip in to that? like monday mexican nite, tuesday italian, etc?

last year each camp member had a dinner night and made what was agreed upon. this year we are fending for ourselves and taking turns using the bbq and/or camp cooker.

so it is whatever you and your other camp buddies all decide on. simple.

it really depends on your camp.

my first year, we had a bunch of "communal" nights... which were wiped out with the dust storms.

the next camp was a little more tight-knit and we had communal dining every night, not by plan as much as nightly dinner.

it's hard to plan for what is going to happen and better to have ideas -- like i will be stuff for burritos and susi will bring guac, salsa, and chips for daytime snacking, george will bring something sweet to share, etc. but then again, i like a more fluid experience than some.

this year our camp is doing the "pick a night and team up with somebody and be in charge of that dinner." our camp has 20 members. the cooking crew is responsible for purchasing the food. some people in camp don't want to participate, and so they will just cook their own things and not have to contribute to group kitchen.

two years ago i planned all the menus, we bought food as a group, and people could volunteer for the breakfast or dinner crew they wanted to be part of (included cooking as well as cleanup). that was for a camp with 40 members.

My camp picks out a menu for dinners so that there is some variety from night to night and so things that don't keep well get cooked earlier in the week, and later meals have non-perishable ingredients. One person does most of the meal/grocery planning and assigns people to cook with a buddy. The person in charge changes from year to year. We have surveys for each camp member to schedule them around things they can't miss doing and meals they like to cook and also for buying snacks and lunch and breakfast foods (which are more of a grab something on your own affair). This way everyone has the things they like and only one or two people do the shopping - bulk makes things cheaper, and coordinating many shoppers is a pain.
