sushi on the first night :) Made with salmon and escolar.

Our meals done beforehand in the Food Saver were definitely THE BOMB: poached salmon, chicken curry, barbecue beef short ribs. I would recommend it for sure, you just keep the package on ice until you're hungry, boil it in some water (doesn't have to be clean, can be reused) and presto! Home cooked meal :)

Miso soup was my favorite, salty and filling.

I made pulled pork in the crockpot (pork loin, slow-cooked for 8 hours with bourbon-maple basting sauce and stoneground mustard, shred, cook for another hour) that was just freaking DELICIOUS, hot or cold. Campmates just about lost their shit when I handed some around.

Also, as usual, pre-made breakfast burritos wrapped in foil-- can heat up in a pan with no mess due to the foil.

In terms of things not working out-- I used a food vacuum sealer to make a few things, and then didn't want to bother heating up a whole pot of water to throw them in.... those came home in the cooler.

brody, you have my mouth watering!

sand, sorry to hear you missed those but i have a feeling you missed many of the awesome treats we brought out to feed people during the week too... all of it was a success... the only thing was it became too difficult as the week went on to keep cooking... i had leftover fresh bran muffin mix and (gasp) leftover ice cream cones that i threw out with a lot of guilt...

but many other treats did make it into happy bellies so i am happy about that...

I had those bacon wrapped stuffed dates and they were like sex! And I am talking the best kind of sex that lingers long after it is gone, leaving sweet memories! Teehee!

Margot and Rog rocked our camp with all of the goodies that they would bring out randomly!

Margarita jello squares~ Totally unexpected, a lovely cool sensation going down your throat as the playa swirled around us. Sweet, tart with tiny bits of salt. Heaven! I keep remembering them and with great fondness!

I missed the icecream cones dammit!

But I had this awesome sweet and savory buffalo sausage bread, grilled on the grill of all things with butter. OMFG! Talk about yummy. And deviled eggs with crab! Fawk. My friends rawk so hard!

The only thing that I shared with camp was a fresh salad and while not nearly as exciting as Margot and Rog's delectable tidbits, it was refreshing after our camp cook served just plain meat the night before that was as disappointing as bad sex.

But we won't think about that right now.

Oh yeah and Margot & Rog also made caramel popcorn with bacon in it! They won't toot their horns but I will!!!!

      Toot! Toot! Toot!

Being stoveless this year, I brought pre-cooked bacon and heated it on aluminum foil on my dashboard. Didn't get super-crispy, but so so tasty.

Also, I made those oatmeal breakfast food bars that someone here posted the recipe for, and those went over very well with everyone. And a batch of zucchini bread with double the amount of zucchini, plus some carrots. That went over great for breakfast, was really moist, and was a good source of vegetables on the playa! However, I should have chosen one or the other, not zucchini bread PLUS oatmeal bars.

Overall, I brought TWICE as much food as I needed, particularly perishables. That was the problem with only bringing food for myself. (Example: bringing an entire container of cottage cheese and counting it as one meal, when it actually could have been one meal for several people. Dumb!) Coordinating with other campmates would have been better. I brought way too many snacks. Basically I brought enough food to share everything with my campmates. Forgetting that most of them were doing the same thing. Plus a couple things went bad the one day I was too exhausted/lazy to pedal out for ice. RIP artichoke dip. =(

    Other favorites:
    -Chilled chocolate pudding cups
    -Chilled box of See's truffles
    -Frozen homemade margarita mix
-Any fresh fruit or vegetables my neighbors cut up on the spot and shared in the shade of their car (watermelon! salted cucumber! tomatoes!)
-Crostini as a substitute for bread or pita

Next year: one SMALL cooler, and expect to be done with perishables a few days in, and switch to using cooler for drinks. Also, I used dry ice at the bottom of one side of the cooler, which I would do again, and that kept stuff icy for a few days. However, the wet ice from the top melted and the dry ice refroze it, so some of my foods were frozen in place!

Tip: don't rely on ziploc bags in your cooler; they WILL get soggy - use tallish upright tupperware-style containers to contain loose things that should be kept cold and out of melted ice.

I was pretty good this year about not overpacking, and brought home very little food, nearly all of which was consumed within a couple of days or was completely shelf stable and added back into my general food stock. I'm pretty pleased with that this year, as in the past I've had a lot of wasted food on reentry.

There were two main changes for me that made this possible: a 5 day cooler and a vacuum sealer. I was able to cook up and seal all my dinners beforehands and then not have to deal with them on playa. We ate really well; thai curry, sweedish meatballs and noodles, steak, and a few other meals that I'm forgetting, and we had them all frozen and ready to go beforehands. There was no screwing around on the playa cooking complex meals, but things were still really tasty and not sad.

The 5-day cooler allowed me to keep produce surprisingly fresh out there through the whole week; on Sunday while packing up I was able to enjoy a very juicy, delicious necterine I'd bought a week before in Alturus. Stuff that was vacuum sealed or otherwise well packaged I allowed to wallow in the melt water, while stuff like fruits and vegetables I layered atop the ice (which I replenished daily). I even managed to keep three pints of ben & jerry's in an edible form, although it wound up being more drinkable than edible by the time we dug up the last one on Friday. I was also able to keep a couple of bag salads in good enough shape to use on wrap sandwiches, with deli meats 7 cheese.

I also made sure I went through at least one fruit & one vegetable, fresh or canned, per day, which really helped both mood and body. There's few things worse than complete loss of dietary fiber on the playa, unless you enjoy reading the signs inside the potties.

As coolers emptied, we used a larger one to drain meltwater into, which became a head baths. Wednesday and friday wound up being headwashing days, and the initial shock of dunking your head into icewater quickly gave way to cooled bliss for the next half hour or so. Highly recommended!

annies shells & white cheddar + already cooked bacon and tritip + green beans.

    holy freaking crap.

also, shepherd's pie which started with mashed potatoes, then had a few crumbled up [cooked] frozen hamburger patties, canned sweet corn, and topped with cheese. mmmmmmmmm.

I would have to say the best thing I had/made was pre cooked chana masala (in a vacuum sealed bag) and I brought frozen paratha's!!! so yummy indian food and paratha's YUMMMMm....I also had awesome meatballs over at Brody's camp dinner time, YUM!

Only thing that didn't work for me this year was my pre-frozen smoothies. I had done this before, put them in little zip lock bags, in dry ice cooler, I didn't open dry ice cooler for 3 days, then opened it and had one --it was fine, BUT I should have opened/gifted all three bags I made since after I opened the cooler it wasn't cool enough.

I was surprised at how little I brought home, mostly canned/packaged stuff.

And the romain lettuce (hearts) last ALL WEEK, it is by far the best green to bring, that lasts the longest in a crushed ice cooler. Also, my new favorite drink which is half kombucha/half sparkling water with ice and maybe lime/lemon if you have it. SO refreshing! I felt so good out there!

I love my iced drinks out there, so I will always bring at least one cooler.

Favorite packaged item: rice noodle soup bowls from trader joes.

My favorite was the Thai garlic chicken I ordered and froze the day before we left. The only thing I'd do differently is to seal it in the seal-a-meal instead of a rubbermaid container. I think getting all the air out would have kept it fresher. But it was still so incredibly yummy! I also sat and ate an order of peanut sauce by myself with a spoon. No rice even. God it was good.

We ended up with about 5 million quarts of homemade chili because my roommates mom made us a bunch and I made a bunch too, using her recipe. I loved all the yummy tomatoes it had in it and it was quite good eaten cold out of the pouch. I'll definitely bring that again.

Next year, tasty bites and more ready to eat meals.
