I go through this every year- I make a list of things to make/bring, and then sit there staring at it, wondering if it's going to be enough, too much, etc etc. Since I change what I bring from year to year, and since circumstances are always different, it's a HELL of a time trying to figure out the amount of food to bring.
I always tend to default towards More rather than Less, since it's not like I can run across town to the supermarket.
Anyone have any tips or suggestions or advice on figuring this out? Experiences?

Re: Struggling with how MUCH to bring.
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 12:59 PMWe make a grid with a square for each day and each meal. We go through and fill it up with planned meals (mostly premade) and figure out how much stuff we need to make that (i.e. we need 10 slices of bread for sandwiches for the week, so one loaf is plenty). Then we list a few snacks and how much we think we'll realistically eat. Then we cut a few things off the list to pare down.
We always bring way too much food, no matter how much we pare down each year, but I would rather have a bit too much food and more variety to choose from than to not eat because nothing we brought is appealing! -

Re: Struggling with how MUCH to bring.
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 2:56 PMAs you've probably read elsewhere, everybody eats way less on the playa due to the heat.
I go to several grocery stores without any list, walk the aisles looking for things that don't require much prep time (we are all lazy on the playa, and everything seems to take twice as long to do compared to home), buy stuff that seems interesting and put it into a big box at home. After the box seems about full, I dump it out and divide it into meals on the floor, for the number of days I'm gonna be on playa. Then I make a list of things I am missing or want to buy more of, and the stuff I am not gonna take goes into my cupboard for food at home. This casual approach works for me as I am not too picky what I eat at the burn. For me simplicity is the key, and the most I want to do is boil some water or heat something up in a pan without much clean-up.
Plus, any packaged food you have left over from your week on playa, you can gift to the DPW to use for the few weeks of clean-up.

Re: Struggling with how MUCH to bring.
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 3:00 PMSpork- thanks for the grid idea....that's a good one, and maybe part of the planning that I'm missing. (It just seems overwhelming to stare at a huge list of STUFF).
This will be my 6th year on the playa, I should have this down to a science every year....it's always fine and I never go hungry, but I'm trying to figure out how to dial this in so I'm not always like "AAAAHHH FOOD LISTS SUCK". -

Re: Struggling with how MUCH to bring.
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 8:13 AMI always plan out each meal, for each day - now, usually that doesn't mean anything fancy, for me. And, it is just me, not a camp. Whatever I think I might want for breakfast one day, lunch another, etc. Then I cook/pack accordingly.
Then I get it, and eat as I please while I'm there. I always end up with plenty to share, and plenty to bring home. I do take less, than I used to, because I know the odds of munching here and there are pretty strong.
I just have the whole radical self-reliance thing, and could never not show up with everything I might need, even knowing full-well it is too much.
...if that made sense.

Re: Struggling with how MUCH to bring.
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 8:48 AMBrody, one note on the grid. We plan out enough meals for all week, but we don't plan out what to eat on which day. We like to free form when we're there, but I like the visual of knowing we have enough food for the week. -

Tue, August 25, 2009 - 8:39 AMYeah, that makes sense. I sketched out something like that, and I think it's really helping. We shall see, today's the big Food Run and Prep day. Yipes!

Re: Struggling with how MUCH to bring.
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 10:37 AMI overbuy on purpose with the idea that I'll leave some stuff for DPW. (You could also take the unused things home w/you)
Go with small containers rather than family size, so you have unopened stuff.
Things that can go into your cooler/fridge during the week are good. Small boxed orange juices, for instance.
Plan on eating the perishables early. By the end of the week, everybody is gifting food.
Canned bacon IS the greatest invention since sliced bread.

I have a can left over from last year that I'll be bringing along.
It's okay -- not great -- but definitely better than broccoli
