I'm used to cooking on MSR stoves, but volunteered to organize my camp's kitchen this year. How many propane cylinders should I plan on packing per day for a two-top coleman stove that's going to live in the common kitchen and see heavy use?

Re: How many hours out of a propane tank?
Fri, August 22, 2008 - 11:08 AMi can't be certain on how many hours but we use 3 or so of the throw away cylinders for the week with heavy use.
an alternative if you or a friend have/has a gas bbq at home you could buy an adapter hose that will let you use a bigger tank and not have to worry about running out. -

Re: How many hours out of a propane tank?
Fri, August 22, 2008 - 11:31 AMWow. That's a lot better than the two google'd comments I was able to find. Both of them seemed to suggest about 1 day of use per cylinder. -

Re: How many hours out of a propane tank?
Fri, August 22, 2008 - 12:19 PMmaybe we didn't use our cook stove as often as the google people, but we certainly didn’t use one cylinder per day. it couldn't hurt to bring 6 or 7 just to be on the safe side. cheap insurance for keeping the coffee and food hot and in turn the camp happy with you. -

Re: How many hours out of a propane tank?
Fri, August 22, 2008 - 12:28 PMAye. Though space is my concern. It's always a squeeze to get a week's worth of supplies and comforts into my wee hatchback. Add on the kitchen gear I'm packing this year and every cubic foot counts. -

Re: How many hours out of a propane tank?
Fri, August 22, 2008 - 2:09 PMHow high of heat are you using? - that will change how many hours you get out of a tank. How many people and meals are you talking about? -

Re: How many hours out of a propane tank?
Fri, August 22, 2008 - 2:52 PMA 50 person camp, where maybe half the camp uses the kitchen, tops. Include one communal meal per night where 4 or 5 cooks keep 4 burners on two coleman stoves busy cooking for 30 to 40 people. -

Re: How many hours out of a propane tank?
Sat, August 23, 2008 - 10:56 AMthat is a big reasonability keeping that many people fed. i would take 12 to 14 cylinders to be on the safe side. if you are just reheating a big pot of already cooked and prepared chili/stew or the like each night you could get by with 10 or so.
or ask someone to bring along the big tank with adapter hose i talked of yesterday.
